In both art and film, I am most inspired by work that draws the viewer in because of its visceral, and maybe even ridiculous, beauty, only to reveal an unsettling scenario or reality that then must be confronted. I've made several bodies of mixed-media, sculptural work, with this as my objective. The first of which was a series of life-sized human/animal sculptures, drawings and installations entitled "Doegirl and other Adventures in Bioegineering" about a bio-engineered princess who lives in a forest with other similar creatures - part animal, part human. In the storyline, some of the animals, called Handimals, have functioning human arms which give them coveted human abilities. But messing with nature turns out to be a recipe for disaster, and as mutants are born, the society becomes viciously segregated and discrimination becomes a way of life.
